Massachusetts is Not Disposable Forum June 1, 2023 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Massachusetts State House, 24 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02133. Room 428 Hello Beyond Plastics Greater Boston, If you are available, please attend the Massachusetts is Not Disposable Forum on Thursday, June 1, at 1:00, at the Massachusetts State House, Room 428. The forum is hosted by The National Caucus of Environmental Legislators, NCEL, and Massachusetts Senator, Rebecca Rausch, Committee Chair of the Environment Committee. The forum will include a short film about plastic pollution and a panel discussion with members of Just Zero, MassPirg, and Oceana. It is important to get as many people there as possible who support plastic reduction legislation. The legislators need to see that there is broad interest in getting plastic bans and regulations passed. Everyone should also contact their state reps and senators and meet with them before the June 14th hearing. Here is some more information about legislation Beyond Plastics Greater Boston supports. For those of you who don't know, we are part of a coalition of Zero Waste Advocates from across Massachusetts. More information to follow and we can discuss upcoming actions at our meeting tomorrow evening. - Meet with your legislator before June 14th: If you can’t meet with your legislators on June 1st, please plan a Zoom or in-person meeting with them between now and June 14th. During the meeting, please tell them we need them to support a modernized Bottle Bill, a strong EPR for packaging bill, banning plastic grocery bags, and banning Chemical/Advanced Recycling of plastic. Fact sheets on each of these issues are located here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WWYEsPY-uPYC6WwKYlNSvf8AKbPvxlWX?usp=sharing

A recent report documents the harmful impacts of plastic bottles on human health, environmental justice, and climate change. Hidden Hazards: The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle explores the many health harms of plastics production, the potential health effects of consuming beverages in plastic bottles, and dangers to workers and communities from recycling and disposal. Report co-author Mike Belliveau, Defend Our Health's Executive Director, will present highlights including evidence that the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic used in beverage containers pollutes air, water, and food with cancer-causing chemicals. Port Arthur Community Action Network's Executive Director John Beard Jr., whose Texas community is profiled in the report, will share his experience of exposures to chemicals used to produce PET plastic beverage bottles. Both speakers will discuss findings that exposures to these chemicals falls disproportionately on communities of color and low-income people, largely in the Gulf Coast and Southeast US. Based on their findings, the authors of Hidden Hazards urge all beverage companies to take action to achieve zero discharge of cancer-causing chemicals along the PET supply chain, and end the use of virgin fossil-based PET plastic by 2040 to help solve the climate crisis.
